Facelift Recovery: What You Need to Know for the Best Recovery and Results
Undergoing a facelift is an exciting step toward a more youthful, refreshed appearance. As part of the journey, a smooth recovery will be essential to achieving and enjoying the best possible results. Knowing what to expect and how to care for yourself during this time can make all the difference in achieving smooth, natural-looking results. Here’s what you need to know about facelift recovery.
The First Few Days: Rest and Gentle Care
In the first few days after a facelift, it’s common to have some swelling and discomfort. To minimize these effects, you should rest with your head elevated, like in a recliner chair. You should also sleep with your head and shoulders elevated, propped up with pillows on your bed. This will help reduce swelling and promote better healing. You should also avoid bending, straining, or lifting (no tying shoes, picking up small children, etc.). Short walks are fine, but be mindful of your movements and minimize excess activity.
Your surgeon may place small drains to prevent fluid buildup during recovery. If you have drains, you’ll need to empty and record the fluid output two or three times a day until the drains are removed. Pain medications can help with any discomfort, but be sure to take them with food to prevent nausea. Since pain medications can also cause constipation, drink plenty of fluids and consider a gentle stool softener if needed.
Cleaning and Caring for Your Incisions
Once your dressings are removed, you’ll need to clean your incision sites twice daily using a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution and a cotton swab. After cleaning, apply Bacitracin ointment to aid healing. Showering is allowed once your drains are out, but you should avoid letting water spray directly on your face.
Getting Back to Normal
Sutures are typically removed in stages over 7 to 10 days. Swelling and bruising will gradually subside, the majority resolving within three weeks. While you’ll start to see improvements early on, your final results will take shape over the next few months.
